Easter
Easter (“Húsvét” in Hungarian) is a very important cultural and Christian tradition celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
There are quite a few traditions and customs surrounding Easter in Hungary, but most of them are about celebrating both spring and rebirth.
The old tradition called “locsolkodás” (sprinkling) involves boys reciting a poem to girls and then “sprinkling” them with perfume. Be careful, in the countryside this can also be achieved with a bucket of cold water!
Painting eggs is also a part of Easter traditions in Hungary. Originally eggs were painted red (to symbolize Jesus’s blood), but this has changed to eggs being dyed all kinds of vivid colors.
